The Outside the Box Program is Sold Out.  Please return to this site for information and updates.

What is Outside the Box – Summer Enrichment?

With camps closed and limited recreational opportunities available this summer, seven agencies from the Rochester Jewish community have joined together to collaboratively develop an engaging summer program for kids ages pre-k through college that promotes socializing, community building and fun.

Outside the Box provides age appropriate opportunities to socialize and interact with peers, and have “camp-like” summer fun, all while exploring different aspects of Judaism in multi-sensory and developmentally appropriate ways.  Through a variety of experiences both virtual and home-based, participants will engage both with the Jewish and secular community and at the same time foster relationships with peers, older teens (role modeling) as well as interface with adult role models.

Goals of Project

  • To provide children and families with a structured mechanism for staying connected to one another and to the Jewish community through age appropriate, multi-disciplinary engagement opportunities, which will be both home-based and virtual, that seek to:
  • Be fun, welcoming and embrace the spirit of summer!
  • Provide education in an engaging, multi-sensory and developmentally appropriate manner.
  • Help combat isolation and provide opportunities that promote mental wellness.
  • Build a sense of community among kids and families.

Who can receive an Outside the Box – Summer Enrichment box?  There is something for everyone!

  • Early Childhood – Grade 2
  • Grades 3 – 6
  • Grades 7 – 9
  • Teens / Grade 10 - College

How it Works….

  • Starting on July 6th, each registered participant will receive an actual box, bi-weekly, which will be filled with age appropriate activities.  There will be multiple ways for kids and families to engage with “the box”
  • Families may choose to work on the boxes on their own, without any on-line engagement.
  • Many of the activities will have optional on-line learning components.  For example, there may be a designated time for a certain type of on-line art class that connects to a larger community art project.
  • Each registered participant will be assigned to a team which will have designated madrichim (counselors).  Each team will have scheduled on-line time with their madrichim, mimicking camp, to the best of our ability.
  • IN ADDITION, families have the option to register their children to be matched with an older teen mentor who is part of the JROC Thrive Mentorship Program, facilitated by JFS.  The JROC Thrive Mentorship Program provides families with an additional layer of support for their kids this summer.  The mentors can schedule virtual one-on-one time with their mentee or even have “social -distancing” play dates.
