The Meaning of Liberation: Holocaust Remembrance Day Reflections

The United Nations General Assembly chose January 27, the date on which Auschwitz was liberated, as International Holocaust Remembrance Day. What exactly happened on this historic day? And what occurred three months later, during the liberation of Bergen-Belsen, the largest concentration camp at the war’s end? Dr. Lerner will describe how the British Second Army dealt with the unprecedented horrors confronting them, and how a small group of rescuers went about stemming typhus, burying thousands of dead, and treating 25,000 of 60,000 “displaced persons” in dire need of hospitalization. She will share astonishing stories about the aftermath of the liberation, including the experiences of her mother, then fifteen-year-old Rachel Genuth
