The Jewish Federation of Great Rochester warmly welcomes the selection of Jorge Cardinal Bergoglio as Pope Francis I. We are heartened by his legacy of closeness with the Jewish community and his work as a champion of the poor. Following in the footsteps of his namesake, St. Francis of Assisi, the former Cardinal has a reputation for simplicity and concern for the poor and is committed to the pursuit of socio-economic justice for all people in all places.
The new Pope sent a message to Rome’s Chief Rabbi, Riccardo Di Segni, inviting him to his inaugural Mass at the Vatican on March 19 stating, “I sincerely hope to be able to contribute to the progress that relations between Jews and Catholics have enjoyed since the Second Vatican Council,” along with sharing his commitment to “a spirit of renewed collaboration.”
We are blessed to enjoy a long and historic relationship with the Rochester Catholic community, and are filled with hope that our cherished friendship will continue to flourish during this pivotal time.
